Create a border around your image

  1. To create a stroke or border around your image select the rounded rectangle shape you just created and copy it by clicking Command-C/Control-C.
  2. Create the effect by selecting both the image and the shape and going up to Modify>Mask>Group as Mask.
  3. Once your mask effect is complete, click Command-V/Control-V to Paste the copied shape back in the document.
  4. Once the shape is pasted, remove the Fill and set the Stroke to your liking. Align the stroke on top of the shape and you're all set.

The reason you copied the shape was to ensure you got an exact match for the stroke. You could go back and redraw the stroke over your masked shape but it would be more difficult to get the precise settings.
